Four Ways To Protect Your Charitable Giving
Of course... you want to make a wise investment with your charitable giving. You want your hard-earned dollars to do the most for the most people in need.
1. NEVER GIVE TO A CHARITY YOU DON'T KNOW OVER THE PHONE.
Ask for printed material in the mail so you can make a thoughtful decision. If the representative says that nothing is available by mail, hang up!
2. ASK FOR SPECIFICS on what your gift will really accomplish. Detailed information demonstrates that the charity knows what it wants to do, is able to do it, and understnds how much it will cost.
3. DEMAND FIINANCIAL CREDIBILITY
Look for the logos of accrediting organizations that verify financial trustworthiness.
4. EXPECT A REPORT BACK.
When a charity is meeting real needs in the lives of real people, they will want to let you know how your gift has made a difference. Look for that report back.
People 70 1/2 yrs or older can donate up to $100,000 per person annually to Metro Hope For Kids from their IRA and pay no income tax on the money. Originally created as an economic stimulus measure, it applies to those who must take required minimum distributions from their IRA's. So, instead of taking the money out and paying federal and state taxes on it, you send the money directly to a qualified charitable institution.
